“Les Champauvins” stretches on 34 ha classified in Côtes du Rhône. The plots are located in the northern border of Châteauneuf du Pape, exactly from 3 meters outside the appellation. It is located in the lieux dits of "Champauvins" and "Coudoulet". A small lane of rocks going through the rocky plateaux has been decided to be the AOC limit in 1936. Here, soils are made of red clay and rocks (pebbled stones of quartz). The quantity of rocks can be amazing as they can completely cover the soil. In summer and during the day, the rocks temperature will increase to 55°C. This accumulated heat will be get back to the vines during nights. Day after day, this unique phenomenon allow the grapes to reach a perfect maturity and produce a unique wine.
Intense, brilliant garnet-red color. It reveals lovely fruit, loads of body and a heady bouquet of ground peppers, raspberries cherry liqueur, currants, and spice box. Full-bodied and dense; rich and elegant - it tastes more like a "baby Châteauneuf" than a Côtes du Rhône.
Grilled meat or vegetables. It is also delicious with cheese, such as Camembert, Brie and Gouda.
"Châteauneuf du Pape-like notes of red and black fruits, melted licorice, and peppery garrigue all emerge from the 2022 Côtes du Rhône Les Champauvins, a rich, medium to full-bodied 2022 off ering beautiful richness and depth. Based on 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah, and 10% Mourvèdre that has the Grenache raised in concrete and the Syrah and Mourvèdre in oak, it's going to blow you away any time over the coming 7-8 years or more."

"Red and black fruited nose. Full and integrated on the palate with nice bright fruit highlights of black raspberry, plum, and spice. Lovely, long finish. Made of 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah and 10% Mourvedre. The Grenache is aged in concrete, and the Syrah and Mourvedre in used barrels. - Don WINKLER"

"A velvety, poised and focused Cotes-du-Rhone with aromas of red berries, warm spices and a touch of bark. Full-bodied with round, ripe tannins. Creamy texture with a juicy and delicious core of bright berries funneling through to the lively finish with excellent length. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold."

"Majestic have done well to snap up this delicious, organic-certified GSM blend, because despite its Côtes du Rhône labelling, the 34ha Champauvins vineyard actually abuts the Châteauneuf-du-Pape vineyards of none other than Château de Beaucastel. The wine is aromatic and lifted, exuding ripe crushed raspberries and juicy cherries, as well as more dark black fruit tones. The palate is sweetly-fruited, like blueberry yoghurt. Spicy, succulent, and finishing with dry tannins. This could be your go-to barbecue or mid-week red, but could also be worth keeping another year or two to see how it develops in bottle. - Natalie EARL"

"A very serious Cotes-du-Rhone with deep forest-fruit aromas, as well as hints of smoke and dried herbs, the full, soft tannins filling out the full body very neatly. Nice, spicy and earthy depth at the long finish. Drink or hold."
- James Suckling (February 2022), 92 pts
"Deep hazy ruby in hue, this blend offers good concentration of ripe red-toned fruit on the nose. Notes of cranberry, eucalyptus and plums coat the palate and leave behind fine tannins, making it easy to drink now."

"Sourced from a plot just a stone's throw from Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Les Champauvins is consistently one of the best Côtes-du-Rhône bottlings available. Heady aromas of lilac and crushed white pepper introduce a palate that's powerful yet pure in fruit, packed with flavors of candied raspberry and strawberry leather. Delicate and dusty in tannins, it finishes long on streaks of salt and anise. Lovely young, the wine should improve through 2029 at least. ANNA LEE C. IIJIMA"

"The Grenache dominated (there is 30% Syrah) 2019 Côtes Du Rhône Les Champauvins is perfect for readers looking for a wine that over-delivers and won’t break the bank. A great nose of black cherries, currants, roasted garrigue, licorice, and Provençal spice notes give way to a medium to full-bodied, ripe, balanced, straight up terrific and pleasure bend Côtes du Rhône that will deliver the goods for 4-6 years."

"Much better than a previously tasted tank sample, the bottled 2019 Cotes du Rhone les Champauvins is another successful vintage for this perennial overachiever. Mulberries and raspberries appear on the nose, while the full-bodied, softly dusty palate is concentrated and pure, finishing on long-lasting notes of red berries and salted licorice."

"From lauded terroir on the northern border of Châteauneuf du Pape, 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah, and 10% Mourvedre grapes are grown on rocky “galets” covered red clay soil. Notes of bittersweet chocolate, candied yams, garrigue, and white-peppered cherry denote a layered, ultra-confident red. A mineral depth within and a bright acidity accents sassafras and salted charcuterie. Well-developed and thrilling."

"Not yet bottled, the 2018 Côtes Du Rhône Les Champauvins offers slightly darker notes of cassis, blackberries, ground pepper, violets, and spring flowers. Soft, forward, and straight-up plump, it shows the fleshy, ready-to-go style of this vintage beautifully."

"Alluringly spicy dark-berry aromas with a stony and almost chalky edge. The palate has very fine and compact tannin that carries such long and focused, ripe red plums and berries. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold."

"Now that it's in the bottle, the 2016 Cotes du Rhone les Champauvins is looking as good as I predicted last year. It's a full-bodied, concentrated wine that could mop the floor with many Châteauneufs. Rich black cherry fruit is joined by complex herb and spice notes, a creamy mid-palate and a lingering finish. Worth buying by the case. - Joe Czerwinski"

"Deeper in color than the Cotes du Rhone Reserve, the 2015 Cotes du Rhone les Champauvins is a solid step up, with fabulously complex notes of Bing cherry, blueberries, raspberries, spring flowers and pepper all emerging from the glass. Medium to full-bodied, rich and beautifully textured, it tastes more like a Chateauneuf du Pape than a Cotes du Rhone. Drink it anytime over the coming 4-5 years. - Jeb Dunnuck"
