El Anejon vineyard is a terraced plot on a steep slope, oriented toward the sun and with great views of the Castle of Peñafiel. The soil of the narrow terraces has a compact, loamy limestone texture. The presence of the white-colored limestone calcium salts contributes to a distinctive minerality in this wine. Only made in exceptional vintages.
Deep red purple color. Complex nose, suggestive of red berries, flowers, toast and spice. Fresh and vibrant; powerful and elegant; well-structured and balanced.
"Aromas of blackberry, chocolate-covered espresso bean and lavender set the stage for flavors of cassis, black plum, rose petal, cocoa and licorice. Polished tannins and fine-tuned acidity wend their way to an orange-zest finish. - Mike DESIMONE"

"El Anejón is an eight-hectare amphitheatre that faces the castle of Peñafiel and has been part of the Pago de Carraovejas range since 2009. Marrying Tinto Fino with 12% Cabernet Sauvignon and 7% Merlot, this is a ripe, full-bodied style, even in a cooler, wetter year like 2018, but the power and concentration are framed by attractive oak, with dense plum, liquorice and mulberry flavours and the structure to age. 2025-35"

"The 2018 El Anejón is a blend of 81% Tinto Fino, 12% Merlot and 7% Cabernet Sauvignon from a very steep slope where they have to make it terraced. First produced in 2009, the wine fermented in oak vat and matured in new barrels for one year. It was a very good vintage after the frost of 2017 (when they only produced Pago de Carraovejas); they had enough rain and cooler temperatures, and the crop was very balanced. The summer was dry and warm, the grapes achieved very good ripeness, and the wine finished with 15.5% alcohol. It has a ripe nose with some earthy notes, and despite all the new oak, the wine does not feel too oaky (they also keep the bottled wine for three years before it's released). It's very ripe and comes through as powerful, with plenty of tannin and a dark profile of aromas, developing notes of black olives with time in the glass. They are concerned about the alcohol level in the wine (in the past, they never harvested anything below 14% alcohol), but their main concern is the balance in the wine. It needs some more time in bottle. 16,000 bottles produced. - Luis GUTIERREZ"

"Sweet berries and dried flowers with spiced-chocolate and bay-leaf undertones. Flavorful and long on the palate, charged with creamy tannins and some creme de cassis in the finish. Silky and linear with a hint of plushness here. Drink on release or hold."
- James Suckling (July 2022), 93 pts
"Very different in style from the more powerful 2015 release, although this 2016 still has 15.5% alcohol, the latest bottling of El Anejón also has a much higher percentage of Tempranillo, with 4% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Sauvignon making up the balance. Sourced from a single parcel on limestone at 850 metres, it's wonderfully floral and fresh, with violet and black cherry notes, fine new wood and a hint of stony reduction."

"Dark ruby. Highly perfumed cherry, black raspberry, potpourri and exotic spice scents on the incisive nose; subtle licorice and woodsmoke qualities add complexity. Vibrant, sweet and expansive in the mouth, with a core of juicy acidity giving spine to palate-staining red and blue fruit compote, floral pastille and spicecake flavors. The floral quality gains strength on the finish, which shows outstanding tenacity and lingering cherry and mineral notes. - Josh Raynolds"

"A rich, fruity red from the Duero with lovely, sweet strawberries and cherries and hints of chocolate and toasted oak. Lovely balance and allure. Drink or hold."

"More expensive, the 2014 El Anejon is a parcel selection and is 84% Tempranillo, 8% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 8% Merlot that spent a year in French oak. It’s another beautiful, full-bodied, powerful Ribera del Duero and has a deeper bouquet of black fruits, tobacco, road tar, black olives, and graphite. Slightly more inward and reserved, yet concentrated and serious, give bottles another year or two and it’s going to shine for 15+ years or more. It’s another brilliant wine from this estate."

"The heady, ripe, dark, dense and concentrated 2014 El Anejón shows better balance than the Cuesta de las Liebres from this same vintage. It also has more terroir expression. It has chalky tannins and, in its style, is quite balanced and has a certain elegance. 17,000 bottles and 200 magnums were filled after 12 months in French barriques. - Luis Gutierrez"

"The only 2012, the 2012 El Anejon is the flagship cuvée of the estate and is a parcel selection of 78% Tempranillo and 11% each of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot brought up in French oak. This rock star of a wine got more than a few “wows” in the notes and boasts a fabulous bouquet of crème de cassis, black raspberries, toasted spice, and vanilla bean. Full-bodied, powerful, and concentrated, it’s still incredibly elegant and seamless, with beautiful purity and no hard edges. In addition, its oak is perfectly integrated, and it has a sense of freshness and purity that’s just about off the charts. You can drink this today or cellar bottles for another decade or more. Bravo!"

"Inky ruby. A highly perfumed bouquet evokes ripe, oak-spiced dark berries, candied flowers, vanilla and incense, plus a smoky mineral overtone. Sappy, plush and pure on the palate, offering deeply concentrated blackberry, boysenberry and spicecake flavors that deepen and spread out on the back half. The extremely long, smoke-tinged finish displays silky tannins, outstanding clarity and an echo of candied flowers. - Josh Raynolds"

"The 2012 El Anejón is a wine that always feels fresher, younger and with better integrated oak. It's consistently sourced from a specific plot of vines on small terraces, mostly Tempranillo but also with 11% each Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. All the varieties are nicely integrated and the wine feels solid, compact, with no fissures, ripe and generously oaked, but without excess. It's a powerful, modern, ripe and concentrated Ribera, nicely crafted and easy to like. It was in barrel for one year and then kept for three more years in bottle before it's sold. 18,000 bottles were filled in April 2014. - Luis Gutierrez"

"Showing a touch of maturity, the 2011 El Anejon always comes from the same hillside parcel of vines and is 91% Tempranillo, 4% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 5% Merlot in 2011. Aged a year in French oak, it offers a ripe bouquet of currants, lavender, spice, and dried herbs. This carries to a full-bodied, rounded, ready-to-go beauty that has sweet tannins and a layered, sexy texture. There’s no need to delay gratification here, but it’s going to continue drinking nicely for another decade."

"The 2010 El Anejon is made from 94% Tinto Fino with the balance Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, all of which spent two years in French oak. This full-bodied, powerful, seriously concentrated effort boasts a terrific bouquet of blackcurrant and cherry fruits as well as complex notes of licorice, graphite, road tar, and ample minerality. With beautiful purity and finesse, it’s not all about power and richness and is balanced, complete, and just terrific wine. It has another 10-15 years of prime drinking."

"The 2010 El Anejon de Cuesta Las Liebres is produced with grapes grown at high altitude on chalky soils 96% Tempranillo, 3% Cabernet Sauvignon and 1% Merlot and aged one year in barrel. Of the whole lineup, it-s a clean, delineated, harmonious red, with a more lively palate, and is more soil-driven, with a chalky, supple, almost salty sensation. It has great length and acidity and should develop slowly and for a long time. Drink 2014-2025. - Luis Gutierrez"

"This powerful red shows loamy earth, sanguine and tarry notes. A bit austere, but there's a core of plum and mineral that's fresh and lively. Concentrated and harmonious. Drink now through 2030.—T.M."

"Packed with youthful fruit and spice, this wine is all potential energy for now, like a caged animal lurking inside an oak crate. Give the fruit time to mellow and integrate with the primary oak; in three or four years this will move toward a smoother complexity."

"More open-knit, the 2009 El Anejon (93% Tinto Fino, 6% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 1% Merlot aged two years in French oak) offers a sexy perfume of vanilla-laced cassis, spice, lead pencil, and dried earth. Full-bodied and concentrated on the palate, it’s silky and polished, with no hard edges. Now at age 10, it’s showing some maturity and drinking nicely yet should keep for another decade."

"The 2009 Pago de Carrovejas El Anajon de la Cuesta de las Liebres (to give it its full name), is Tinto Fino blended with 6% Cabernet Sauvignon and 1% Merlot and raised for 12 months in French oak, has a much better, more refined bouquet with blackberry and raspberry fruit, a suggestion of wild heather and cedar. The palate is full-bodied with good backbone and structure, while the crisp acidity keeps the graphite-tinged finish agile and focused. This is very impressive. Drink now-2017." - Wine Advocate (Neal Martin, Issue#205, February 2013), 93 pts
