The Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese Caldo Infernale was produced from over 100-year-old ungrafted vines in the Gewann “im Kalk,” the original part of the vineyard. This is a typical Devonian slate Riesling with fruity elegance and great durability.
Ripe elements of yellow peach, coconut, and pineapple aromas are followed by fresh notes of mint and zesty fruits. The wine shows creamy and juicy flavors, and the bright and zesty finish brings focus and tension to this gorgeous Auslese.
Perfect match with sweet-and-sour dishes as well as spicy food.
"The 2022er Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese Alte Reben Caldo Infernale was made from 40%-botrytized fruit harvested at 92° Oechsle on over 100-year-old un-grafted vines in the Gewann “im Kalk,” the original part of the vineyard, and was fermented and in aged in traditional Fuder cask down to fully sweet levels of residual sugar (86 g/l). This hay-yellow-colored wine still proves very backward and only gradually reveals a nose blending fiercely cooler elements including green apple, bitter grapefruit, and bergamot with riper ones including melon, spices, and pear. A racy side runs through the palate and dominates the flavor profile. It is only in the finish that the beautifully complex and racy flavors come through. The aftertaste is pure but also still quite marked by zest. We would opt to keep this modern-day equivalent of a Feine Auslese in the cellar for at least a decade, in order to give it a chance to integrate its elements. It has obvious potential. 2032-2047"

"The 2021er Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese Caldo Infernale was made from fruit harvested at 94° Oechsle on over 100-year-old un-grafted vines in the Gewann “im Kalk,” the original part of the vineyard and was fermented down to sweet levels of residual sugar (84 g/l). Although riper elements of yellow peach, coconut, Victoria pineapple, and almond cream directly capture the attention, the nose maintains a fresh side with minty and zesty notes. The wine shows ripe and sweet elements on the palate, and has quite some creamy and juicy elements such as canned yellow peach and pineapple. The finish brings the right amount of zest to lift up the aromatics and adds focus and tension, while there is an almost Eiswein-type of acidity in the aftertaste. This is a gorgeous Auslese."

"The ‘Caldo Infernale’ is the crowning glory of Gessingers’ noble sweet wines. Although it’s from the hottest spot of their Sonnenuhr vineyard, it still manages to present its sweet citrus fruit content with delightful charm rather than unctuous concentration. Some Auslesen are made for sipping, this one is made for drinking."

"I loved the 2015, and the 2017 Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese Alte Reben Caldo Infernale is even better, offering a lush, rich, yet still vibrant style as well as gorgeous notes of honeyed nectarines, candied orange, peach, and exotic flowers. It packs plenty of sweetness and is medium to full-bodied, with solid acidity and a kiss of petrol and mineral nuances keeping it lively and fresh."

"Beeswax, slate and key lime impart initial scents, followed by ripe peach. The palate is über generous, coating the palate in an unctuous sheathe. Candle wax, lemon verbena, ginger, and honeyed pears go on and on."

"Sun-kissed yellow cherry and mango notes are juxtaposed by struck flint, salt and slate in this spry yet powerfully fruity Riesling. The midpalate is sweet and spicy yet intensely mineral, reverberating through a long, stony finish. Drinks well already but likely to improve from 2021."

"The 2015 Gessinger Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese Alte Reben Caldo Infernale is a more complex, rounded, layered Auslese that takes air to show at its best. Beautiful notes of dried hay, crushed rocks, and subtle petrol are nicely balanced by plenty of honeyed peach and orchard fruits on the nose. With plenty of sweetness, a clean, layered texture, good concentration, and a great finish, it’s well worth seeking out."
