Red ruby colored wine with violet tones; well-balanced, spice, black fruit, vanilla, coffee roasted beans and coconut flavors. Powerful, rich, complex and silky smooth...classic old style Rioja at a bargain price.
Pairs well with aged cheeses and grilled meats.
"A fruity and attractive red with medium body, red fruit and a fresh finish. Not a lot of structure, but delicious and fruity at the end. And not overdone. Tempranillo. Drink now."

"I find balance, seriousness and some restraint in the 2018 Crianza. It has moderate alcohol and contained ripeness, integrated oak and a polished palate with fruit and spice flavors that make it quite recognizable as Rioja. It has some tannins that would welcome food and/or a little bit more time in bottle. It's 90% Tempranillo and 10% Graciano matured in American oak barrels for one year. 240,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in April 2020. - Luis Gutiérrez"

"Founded in 1987 by six wine-growing families, today the Burgo Viejo co-op makes wines from 16 growers with 200ha of vineyards in Rioja Oriental. This is an absolute bargain for classic Rioja lovers, offering plenty of mellow red and black fruit on the palate, with well defined cassis and blueberry notes. Wrapped in a veneer of oak, with grainy tannins and leathery hints, leading to a rich, spicy finish."

"A tight red with a dense palate of dark berries and chocolate. Full and reserved, yet polished and energetic. Give it two years to soften. Drink in 2020."
- James Suckling (August 2nd 2018), 92 pts
"Well priced and very appealing, this is part of a line up of really enjoyable, harmoniously oaked wines from Burgo Viejo, made from Tempranillo and 5% Graciano. Pepper spicy and refined, with clean, modern, textured blackberry fruit and a fresh, tangy finish. 2019-24."

"Deep ruby. Smoky-accented cherry, blackcurrant and coconut aromas are sharpened by a suggestion of cracked pepper that adds spicy lift. Push and broad in the mouth, offering sweet dark fruit liqueur and oak spice flavors that slowly tighten up on the back half. Finishes creamy and appealingly sweet, with rounded tannins coming in late to add framework and gentle grip. - Josh Raynolds"

- 2018 Decanter World Wine Awards, 90 pts, SILVER MEDAL
"(aged for a year in new and used American oak barrels) Brilliant ruby. Smoke-accented red fruit, floral and coconut scents are sharpened by a peppery nuance that builds with aeration. Sweet and lively on the palate, offering jammy raspberry and cherry flavors that show good depth and focus. Takes a darker turn to cherry on the finish, which repeats the coconut note and hangs on with good, spicy tenacity.- Josh Raynolds"

"The 2015 Crianza is a blend of 90% Tempranillo and 10% Graciano that fermented in stainless steel and aged in used American barriques for 12 months. There is good ripeness, showing the character of the year, with notes of black fruit and some faint spices. The palate is medium-bodied and juicy, with some spicy flavors in the finish. 240,000 bottles produced. - Luis Gutiérrez"

"The 2015 Burgo Viejo Rioja Crianza begins with an inviting aroma of black cherry, lots of oak (in the form of vanilla, cedar, chocolate and more) and baking spice notes. Taking a sip reveals tons of vanilla and oaky spice interlaced with lots of juicy, ripe dark fruit. This is a silky smooth, medium-bodied wine with good acidity. Cocoa and coffee notes come out mid-palate and lead into the long-lasting, dry finish featuring lingering oaky spice notes and dark raisiny fruit. This is really tasty, flavorful stuff with tons of good old American oak! - Jon Thorsen"

"Lots of red fruit character on the nose and palate. Fresh and vibrant in the mouth, not terribly deep but lively and pleasant."
- 2017 Decanter World Wine Awards, 92 pts, SILVER MEDAL
"Deep ruby. Aromas of cherry pit, licorice and vanilla, along with a smoky nuance in the background. Chewy and focused on the palate, offering oak-accented bitter cherry and cassis flavors that become livelier with aeration. A floral note appears on the long, smoke-tinged finish, which is given shape and grip by dusty, fine-grained tannins.- Josh Raynolds"
- Antonio Galloni's Vinous (May 2017), 90 pts
"Berry and cinnamon aromas are lightly woody and spicy. This is tannic but not mean or fierce. Flavors of oaky plum and berry fruits turn savory in front of a finish with a dry, snappy, slightly raw feel. Given that 2013 was a cold vintage, this Crianza deserves praise."
- Wine Enthusiast (August 2016), 90 pts
"Fresh and focused, this lively red delivers crunchy flavors of black cherry and red plum, backed by vanilla, toast, floral and mineral notes. Well-integrated tannins and citrusy acidity lend structure. Drink now through 2025. 10,000 cases made.—T.M."

"Vivid ruby. High-pitched red berry and floral scents are complemented by vanilla and woodsmoke. Sweet and seamless on the palate, offering juicy raspberry and cherry flavors that deepen on the back half. In an energetic style, with strong closing punch and supple tannins adding grip.- Josh Raynolds"

"These wines are from the same producer as the Palacio del Burgo offerings reviewed later in this report, and, for my taste, seem almost identical to those wines. The 2011 Crianza is made from a blend of 90% Tempranillo and 10% Graciano (identical to the Palacio del Burgon Crianza). It possesses notes of graphite, new saddle leather, black cherries, blackcurrants and a hint of loamy soil in its lush, heady, pure, medium-bodied mouthfeel. Drink now-2016. - Robert Parker"

"(90% tempranillo and 10% graciano; raised in a combination of stainless steel and American oak): Opaque ruby. Smoky cherry-vanilla and pipe tobacco on the nose, with an exotic coconut quality adding complexity. Fresh cherry and dark berry flavors pick up a minty note with air, which adds energy to the supple, nicely persistent finish. This is drinking well now."
