"A vibrant syrah with a slight peppery and herbal edge to the red cherries, plums, stones and berries. Lovely tension and clarity to the palate with silky tannins that are fully resolved in the lengthy finish. 100% syrah. Delicious now."

"Spicier and arguably more varietal as a result, this stylish Syrah hails from Vista Flores in the centre of the Uco Valley. Pepper, tapenade and red berry fruit are embellished by understated oak and fine-grained tannins. Appealingly northern Rhône-like. 2023-28"

"This show plums, blackberries, charcuterie, bark and a touch of leafiness. Medium-to full-bodied with firm tannins and a chocolatey mouth-feel. Mellow and developed dark-fruit character with a classic, syrah-like peppery touch. Drink or hold."

"Bright ruby. Slightly medicinal scents of blackberry and spicy oak. Then surprisingly creamy and sweet in the mouth, but with enough acidity to frame its blueberry, blackberry, pepper and spice flavors. Not at all a wild style of Syrah--in fact, downright easygoing--but finishes with fine-grained tannins and sneaky length. - Stephen Tanzer"

"Deeply coloured and concentrated, as you expect from an ambitious Uco Valley red, this is still showing quite a bit of oak, but has plenty of bramble and blackberry fruit and a twist of pepper. Just needs a little more time. 2020-25"

"This Syrah is major league for Argentina. Earthy plum and herbal aromas of menthol and cola lead to a saturated palate that some might find to be too syrupy for their liking. Blackened berry-fruit flavors are rich, while this fully extracted and ripe Syrah ends with a fiery note; drink through 2022. - MICHAEL SCHACHNER"

"Good dark red. Strong torrefaction oak notes sweeten the aromas of black raspberry, black pepper and licorice. Rich, plush and sweet, displaying a slightly reductive animal quality to its deep flavors of smoky black raspberry and pepper. A very fine-grained, slightly wild wine with real Syrah character. Boasts lovely depth and finishes even sweeter than the excellent '14, with its broad, dusty tannins in harmony with its fruit. There's no rush to drink this. - Stephen Tanzer"

"aged in a combination of French and American oak): Medium ruby. Musky aromas of blackberry, blueberry, mocha, spices and minerals, complicated by a varietally expressive whiff of meat. Velvety-smooth and nicely concentrated, displaying noteworthy savory lift to its black fruit, violet and leather flavors. Finishes lively and long, with supple tannins and good peppery lift and length. - Stephen Tanzer"

"Initial aromas of jammy black fruits and cardamom yield to cheesy oak as this airs out. A plump wide palate is blocky, while gamy notes of animal hide, cassis, plum and oak form the flavor profile. A lingering exotic taste of blueberry centers a mild finish."

"Raspberry, vanilla and toast are the lead aromas on this mouthfilling Syrah. A flavor profile led by woodspice and blackberry offers lesser red-fruit notes, while the finish is chewy and ripe, with flavors of chocolate, nutmeg and vanilla. This is New World, warm-climate Syrah all the way."

The 2009 Monteagrelo Syrah has a gregarious, blueberry and boysenberry-scented bouquet with touches of mint and fennel. The palate is medium-bodied with sturdy tannins, plenty of earthy, mulberry and dark plum fruit and a structured finish that suggests this could age well over 5-6 years. Drink now-2018.

Bright ruby-red. Slightly reduced aromas of medicinal dark cherry, licorice and cocoa powder. Round, plump and nicely sweet, but with a youthfully medicinal quality keeping the flavors under wraps today. More broad than deep--and a rather polite style of syrah. Finishes with tongue-dusting, slightly dry tannins and good length.

This opens with red fruit aromas that are wrapped around earth and leather scents, yielding a rustic whole. It feels snappy, with red fruit acidity leading to a gritty, lively palate, with flavors of brown sugar, red pepper, plum and raspberry. Long on the finish but short on texture.

This isn't quite up top the remarkable standards of Walter Bressia's other top reds, but it's still a pretty serious Syrah. As ever, the emphasis is on balance and freshness rather than over-ripe fruit, with sweet tannins and good acidity, but there's just a hint of bitterness on the finish.

The 2008 Syrah Monteagrelo was aged in French and American oak for 15 months. Notions of sandalwood, lavender, smoked meat, and blueberry lead to an elegant style of Syrah with a smooth texture, good depth, and a seamless finish. Drink it over the next 6-8 years.
