Sherwood Estate is a family owned and operated winery located in the picturesque Waipara Valley, a 45-minute drive north of the city of Christchurch. It was founded in 1987 by Dayne and Jill Sherwood, and is one of the largest – and oldest – family-owned wineries in New Zealand.
All production and processing is done at the winery in Waipara, from fruit receival, crushing, pressing, fermentation, racking, filtering, bottling and dispatch, under the supervision of senior winemaker Petter Evans.
Sherwood Estate owns over 105 hectares (260 acres) of vineyards in Marlborough and the Waipara Valley, growing Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, Riesling, Chardonnay & Pinot Gris. The Waipara Valley has a unique micro-climate not seen anywhere else in New Zealand. The wide, gravelly valley floor, formed by an ancient glacial river bed, is sheltered on both sides by limestone-derived clay hills. The valley provides protection from the weather fronts to provide long, warm autumns to perfectly ripen the fruit.
