There's really very little Sangiovese in Chile. It was an educated gamble to plant this variety in La Despensa little corner of Colchagua and the team is thrilled with the results.
This Sangiovese is a fresh and fruity take on a classic Italian variety, but with the typical savoury notes of tomato and cherry. Perfect for early drinking, but will improve for many years to come.
Pairs perfectly rich pasta sauces.
"The 2021 Wines Sangiovese was produced with grapes from vines planted in Santa Ana in Colchagua in 2018, and they think the variety adapts to most soils as long as it has sun and warm weather. They are happy with this first vintage produced in their style of fresh wines with good acidity and high drinkability. It fermented in stainless steel with native yeasts, and 60% of the volume matured in Flextank and 40% in used barrels. It has 14% alcohol, good grip, a Mediterranean nose and varietal typicity. 1,800 bottles were filled in March 2022. - Luis Gutiérrez"

"You can count the number of decent Chilean Sangioveses on the digits of one hand, so it's great to see the first release from Matt Ridgway's La Despensa project. Entirely unwooded, it's a faithful rendition of the variety, showing red cherry, tealeaf and redcurrant flavours and a nip of savoury tannins."
